135x19 mm Ironbark is the standard full-width decking board for buyers who want the most durable timber option in our range. It is the board size most often specified when a deck needs to outlast the structure around it with minimal maintenance over decades of outdoor exposure.

Sold as QLD Class 1 Hardwood: the supplier specification sheet publishes Class 1 above-ground natural durability with a 40+ year service expectation. The timber is naturally deep grey-brown, exceptionally dense and hard, and grown along the NSW and southern Queensland coast. Its density means it is frequently made to order rather than carried as continuous shelf stock, and pre-drilling is standard practice for fixing.

Looking for 140x19 decking? This board measures 135 mm across the face, not 140 mm. Laid with the standard 4 mm gap it covers 139 mm of deck per board against 144 mm for a 140 mm board, so a 140x19 deck needs about 3.5 percent fewer linear metres for the same area. Our genuine 140x19 decking is 140x19 Merbau and 140x19 Peninsula Blonde, both imported hardwoods rather than Australian Class 1 species. Technical profile

From the supplier specification sheet: Red Ironbark is Eucalyptus crebra and E. fibrosa; Grey Ironbark is E. drepanophylla. Grey Ironbark carries a Very High seasoned strength rating (SD1) with Janka hardness 16 and density of 1106 to 1170 kg/m3, while Red Ironbark is rated SD3 with Janka 11.9. The species is BAL 19 to 29 rated under AS 3959-2009, termite resistant, and rated Class 1 above-ground durability with a 40+ year service expectation.

Applications

Decking, screening, battens, heavy outdoor structures and high-traffic decks.

Installation

Store boards flat, fully supported and off the ground, and keep them dry before installation. Allow the timber to acclimatise at the site before fixing.
Fix with hot dipped galvanised or stainless steel screws, two per joist, pre-drilled and countersunk. Stainless steel fixings are recommended for coastal or poolside work.
Maintain ventilation gaps between boards and adequate ground clearance so the deck can dry out; the supplier installation guidelines under Documents and downloads set out clearances in detail.
Use sharp, quality cutting tools and seal cut ends with decking oil. Wear appropriate eye, ear and breathing protection when cutting.

Maintenance

Clean the surface before coating; an oxalic acid based timber cleaner removes dirt, grease and tannin stains.
Finish with a penetrating decking oil per the coating manufacturer's label, then re-coat on a regular cycle suited to exposure and traffic.
Monitor the coated timber for colour loss and dryness, and re-coat when it begins to look dry to maintain protection.
