135x19 mm Spotted Gum is the standard full-width board for buyers who want a genuinely Australian hardwood deck with dependable strength and broad availability, without stepping up to the premium pricing of Ironbark. It is a strong general-purpose choice for residential and trade decking work.

Sold as QLD Class 1 Hardwood: the supplier specification sheet publishes Class 1 above-ground natural durability with a 40+ year service expectation. The species is grown along the NSW and Queensland coast and shows the pale gold to brown colouring with distinctive darker flecking that gives Spotted Gum its name.

Looking for 140x19 decking? This board measures 135 mm across the face, not 140 mm. Laid with the standard 4 mm gap it covers 139 mm of deck per board against 144 mm for a 140 mm board, so a 140x19 deck needs about 3.5 percent fewer linear metres for the same area. Our genuine 140x19 decking is 140x19 Merbau and 140x19 Peninsula Blonde, both imported hardwoods rather than Australian Class 1 species. Technical profile

From the supplier specification sheet: Spotted Gum covers Corymbia citriodora, C. henryi and C. maculata. It carries a High seasoned strength rating (SD2) with density of 990 to 1180 kg/m3, is termite resistant, and is rated Class 1 above-ground durability with a 40+ year service expectation.

Applications

Decking, screening, cladding, flooring and exterior architectural work.

Installation

Store boards flat, fully supported and off the ground, and keep them dry before installation. Allow the timber to acclimatise at the site before fixing.
Fix with hot dipped galvanised or stainless steel screws, two per joist, pre-drilled and countersunk. Stainless steel fixings are recommended for coastal or poolside work.
Maintain ventilation gaps between boards and adequate ground clearance so the deck can dry out; the supplier installation guidelines under Documents and downloads set out clearances in detail.
Use sharp, quality cutting tools and seal cut ends with decking oil. Wear appropriate eye, ear and breathing protection when cutting.

Maintenance

Clean the surface before coating; an oxalic acid based timber cleaner removes dirt, grease and tannin stains.
Finish with a penetrating decking oil per the coating manufacturer's label, then re-coat on a regular cycle suited to exposure and traffic.
Monitor the coated timber for colour loss and dryness, and re-coat when it begins to look dry to maintain protection.
