Australian Timber And Certification
How Sydney Timber Supply describes where each product's timber comes from, and what evidence sits behind that description.
Our claims
What our trust marks mean
Class 1 hardwood durability
Our Australian hardwood species (Ironbark, Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Redgum sold as QLD Reds, and Gympie Messmate sold as QLD Blondes) carry supplier-published natural durability Class 1 ratings, stated as Class 1 above-ground with a 40+ year service expectation. Redgum and Gympie Messmate are Queensland hardwoods. The exact wording sits in the supplier specification sheets we hold on file, and is carried into our own product specification sheets. Pine and Merbau never carry this rating.
Certification marks belong to our suppliers
Certification marks such as PEFC and the AS 4707 chain-of-custody statement appear in our supplier's own documentation and belong to that supplier and its mills. They are not Sydney Timber Supply certifications and we do not claim them as our own. Supplier documents are held on file and can be provided on request.
Where our timber comes from
We only make an origin claim against a product when we hold supplier documentation to support it. Where we don't hold that documentation yet, we say so rather than guessing.
Australian Timber
The species was grown and milled in Australia, per supplier documentation we hold for that specific product.
Imported Timber
Some species, such as Merbau, are imported. Where a product is imported, we state it plainly rather than implying an Australian origin.
Origin To Be Confirmed
Until we hold documentation confirming a product's origin, no origin claim is shown against it.
Origin and certification claims are made on a per-product basis, only when supplier documentation supports them. Certificates and supporting evidence vary by species and supplier.
Evidence
Specification, certification and installation documents
These are Sydney Timber Supply documents. The technical content in them is drawn from the specification sheets and guidelines our supplier provides, and each document names its source. Our supplier's own certificates and flyers stay the supplier's documents. We index them and name their issuer rather than rebranding them, and we will send any of them on request in their original form.
Supplier Evidence & Certification Index
Which supplier document sits behind each product, who issued it, and which products it actually covers, including what we do not hold. The AS 4707 chain-of-custody statement belongs to Howard Sawmill, our supplier, not to us, and is indexed as theirs. PDF, 3 pages.
Product specification sheets
A Sydney Timber Supply specification sheet for every species we stock: durability, hardness, density, sizes and selling unit, with the supplier source named on each sheet. PDF, 4 pages each.
Decking Storage, Handling & Installation Guide
Our own guide to on-site storage, ventilation, board gapping, fixings and coatings for hardwood and softwood decking. Technical content is adapted from our supplier's guidelines and attributed inside the document. PDF, 4 pages.
Common questions
What does Class 1 hardwood mean?
Class 1 is the highest natural durability class for timber. Our supplier specification sheets state Class 1 above-ground durability with a 40+ year service expectation for Ironbark, Spotted Gum, Redgum (QLD Reds) and Gympie Messmate (QLD Blondes). We show the Class 1 badge only on those products, never on pine or Merbau.
Why don't all products show an origin claim?
Not every species or shipment comes with the same paperwork. We show an origin claim only where we hold supplier documentation for that specific product; otherwise the origin is marked as "Origin to be confirmed" rather than guessed.
Is Merbau Australian?
No. Merbau is an imported hardwood. Where we sell Merbau, it is stated plainly as imported timber, not as an Australian-grown product.
Where do certificates come from?
Certificates and supporting documentation come from our suppliers and vary by species and shipment. We hold the relevant documentation for a product before making any origin claim against it.
