140x19 mm Merbau decking is the wide-board line of the most widely used imported decking hardwood in the Sydney market. Merbau is stable, easy to work and weathers to a deep reddish brown. The supplier lists Class 2 durability for Merbau decking.

Merbau is an imported hardwood. It is not Australian grown and is not part of our Class 1 Australian hardwood range. Like all Merbau, it can release tannins in its first months in service, so manage runoff near light paving or render.

Sold per linear metre in random lengths. Preferred lengths, packs and bulk quantities are quoted against current supplier availability: add your linear metres to the cart, or request a quote for project volumes.

Timber calculator

Calculating for: 140x19 Merbau Hardwood Decking

Calculator mode
Area to linear metres

Supplied in random lengths, so there is no length to choose: order the total linear metres you need.

Enter your measurements and select Calculate to see an estimate.

How this is calculated

Cover width (m) = (board width + gap) ÷ 1000

Linear metres required = area ÷ cover width

Linear metres with wastage = linear metres × (1 + wastage ÷ 100)

Reverse: estimated coverage area = linear metres × cover width

Estimates only. Confirm final quantities against your measured plans and the product's actual cover width before ordering.

Guidance

Working with this timber

Technical profile

From supplier documentation: Merbau decking is supplied in board lengths of 1800 to 5700 mm as random lengths, with set lengths published in 90 x 19 and 140 x 19 profiles. The supplier lists Class 2 durability for Merbau decking.

How Sydney Timber Supply supplies it: we supply this profile in random lengths only, ordered by total linear metres. The set lengths noted above are part of the supplier's published range, not an ordering option at STS. Preferred individual lengths can be requested by quote.

Applications

Residential decking runs, steps and general outdoor decking work.

Installation

  • Store boards flat, fully supported and off the ground, and keep them dry before installation. Allow the timber to acclimatise at the site before fixing.
  • Fix with hot dipped galvanised or stainless steel screws, two per joist, pre-drilled and countersunk. Stainless steel fixings are recommended for coastal or poolside work.
  • Manage tannin runoff near light-coloured paving or render during the first months in service.
  • Use sharp, quality cutting tools and seal cut ends with decking oil. Wear appropriate eye, ear and breathing protection when cutting.

Maintenance

  • Clean the surface before coating; an oxalic acid based timber cleaner removes dirt, grease and tannin stains.
  • Finish with a penetrating decking oil per the coating manufacturer's label, then re-coat on a regular cycle suited to exposure and traffic.
  • Monitor the coated timber for colour loss and dryness, and re-coat when it begins to look dry to maintain protection.
