140×35 mm Blackbutt is the heavy-section board in our Blackbutt range: full width, at close to twice the thickness of the 19 mm decking lines. Suitability for a particular span, joist spacing or structure is confirmed at quote stage against current supplier specification.

Blackbutt is a straight grained, even textured Australian hardwood in creamy blonde to rich honey tones that takes oils and finishes well. The supplier specification sheet publishes, for the species, Class 1 above-ground durability with a 40+ year service expectation and a BAL 29 bushfire rating under AS 3959-2009.

Sold per linear metre in random lengths. Preferred lengths, packs and bulk quantities are quoted against current supplier availability: add your linear metres to the cart, or request a quote for project volumes.

Technical profile

From the supplier specification sheet, at species level: Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis) carries a High seasoned strength rating (SD2) with Janka hardness 8.9 (Hard) and density of 990 to 1100 kg/m3. The species is BAL 29 rated under AS 3959-2009, termite resistant, and rated Class 1 above-ground durability with a 40+ year service expectation.

How this applies to the 140 x 35 section: the figures above are published for the species. The seasoning condition, grade and structural rating of this heavier section are confirmed at quote stage against current supplier specification rather than assumed from the 19 mm decking lines.

Applications

Decking and outdoor work where a heavier Blackbutt board section is specified. Intended structural use for this section is confirmed at quote stage.

Installation
  • Store boards flat, fully supported and off the ground, and keep them dry before installation. Allow the timber to acclimatise at the site before fixing.
  • Fix with hot dipped galvanised or stainless steel screws, two per joist, pre-drilled and countersunk. Stainless steel fixings are recommended for coastal or poolside work.
  • Maintain ventilation gaps between boards and adequate ground clearance so the deck can dry out; the supplier installation guidelines under Documents and downloads set out clearances in detail.
  • Use sharp, quality cutting tools and seal cut ends with decking oil. Wear appropriate eye, ear and breathing protection when cutting.

Maintenance
  • Clean the surface before coating; an oxalic acid based timber cleaner removes dirt, grease and tannin stains.
  • Finish with a penetrating decking oil per the coating manufacturer's label, then re-coat on a regular cycle suited to exposure and traffic.
  • Monitor the coated timber for colour loss and dryness, and re-coat when it begins to look dry to maintain protection.
