A cutting list turns into an order in three steps: group the pieces by section and treatment, total them, then order in the way that size is sold. Our 70 x 35, 70 x 45 and 90 x 35 mm H3 treated pine is sold per linear metre. Our untreated 90 x 35 and 90 x 45 mm and treated 90 x 45 and 140 x 45 mm pine is sold as whole boards in set lengths. The sections themselves come from your plans; this guide is only about quantities.
Step 1: group by section and treatment
List each piece with its section, treatment and cut length. Keep treated and untreated apart even when the section is the same, because they are different products for different exposures (see treated vs untreated pine framing).
Step 2a: sizes sold per linear metre
Add up the cut lengths for each section, add an allowance for offcuts and saw cuts, and round up to whole linear metres: linear-metre products are ordered in whole metres. The lengths supplied are confirmed with your order, so check them against your longest pieces before cutting.
| Worked example: 70 x 35 mm H3 | Linear metres |
|---|---|
| 8 pieces at 2.4 m | 19.2 |
| 6 pieces at 1.8 m | 10.8 |
| Total cut length | 30.0 |
| Plus a 10% allowance (your choice) | 33.0 |
| Order | 33 LM |
If a piece is longer than the lengths you are offered, tell us when you order or ask through request a quote.
Step 2b: sizes sold by the board
On these product pages the variant is the board length. Fit your cut lengths into the available lengths with the least waste, then order the number of boards in each length. Check the lengths on each product page, because they differ by product.
| Worked example: 90 x 45 mm treated, lengths offered 2.4, 3.6 and 4.8 m | Boards |
|---|---|
| 8 pieces at 1.2 m: two from each 2.4 m board | 4 x 2.4 m |
| 4 pieces at 3.4 m: one from each 3.6 m board, 0.2 m offcut each | 4 x 3.6 m |
| 2 pieces at 2.4 m and 2 at 2.3 m: one 2.4 m and one 2.3 m from each 4.8 m board | 2 x 4.8 m |
Allow for saw cuts and for trimming ends square; a piece that uses an exact board length leaves no margin.
Step 3: confirm the section and grade
Section, grade and treatment come from your plans, the AS 1684 span tables or your engineer. We supply what you specify. For what the size, grade and treatment labels mean, see choosing an H3 treated pine framing size and MGP10, MGP12 and F7.
FAQ
Can I use the decking calculator for framing?
No. The calculator works from a deck area and a board gap, which does not apply to framing. Total your cutting list instead.
Is there a pack-opening fee on pine?
No. None of our pine framing carries a pack-opening fee. Full-pack pricing on the linear-metre sizes is by quote.
How much allowance should I add?
It depends on your cutting list and the lengths supplied. The 10% in the example is an illustration, not a rule.
