135x19 mm Gympie Messmate is the standard full-width decking board from a Queensland native species that combines strong durability with a lighter, warmer colour than the darker Australian hardwoods. It suits buyers wanting a genuinely Australian-grown deck in pale straw to golden brown tones.

The supplier specification sheet publishes Class 1 above-ground durability with a 40+ year service expectation. Gympie Messmate has a smaller footprint in Sydney retail than Spotted Gum or Merbau, so market listing volume at this exact size is limited; species identity and durability are established via supplier records, while grade and finish detail are confirmed at quote stage.

Looking for 140x19 decking? This board measures 135 mm across the face, not 140 mm. Laid with the standard 4 mm gap it covers 139 mm of deck per board against 144 mm for a 140 mm board, so a 140x19 deck needs about 3.5 percent fewer linear metres for the same area. Technical profile

From the supplier specification sheet: Gympie Messmate (Eucalyptus cloeziana) has Janka hardness 12 (Hard), density of 955 kg/m3 and a medium, interlocking grain. The species is BAL 12.5 to 19 rated under AS 3959-2009, termite resistant, and rated Class 1 above-ground durability with a 40+ year service expectation.

Applications

Decking, screening, step treads and dual decking and flooring use.

Installation

Store boards flat, fully supported and off the ground, and keep them dry before installation. Allow the timber to acclimatise at the site before fixing.
Fix with hot dipped galvanised or stainless steel screws, two per joist, pre-drilled and countersunk. Stainless steel fixings are recommended for coastal or poolside work.
Maintain ventilation gaps between boards and adequate ground clearance so the deck can dry out; the supplier installation guidelines under Documents and downloads set out clearances in detail.
Use sharp, quality cutting tools and seal cut ends with decking oil. Wear appropriate eye, ear and breathing protection when cutting.

Maintenance

Clean the surface before coating; an oxalic acid based timber cleaner removes dirt, grease and tannin stains.
Finish with a penetrating decking oil per the coating manufacturer's label, then re-coat on a regular cycle suited to exposure and traffic.
Monitor the coated timber for colour loss and dryness, and re-coat when it begins to look dry to maintain protection.
