135x35 mm Forest Red Gum is the heavy-duty board in our Forest Red Gum decking family, for commercial and high-load decks that want the warm red-brown tones of this native hardwood in a substantially thicker section than the standard 19 mm profile. A 140x35 mm board is available at the same linear-metre rate; choose the width in the buy box.

Our supplier's Forest Red Gum (Eucalyptus tereticornis) is sold in the market as QLD Reds. The supplier specification sheet publishes Class 1 above-ground durability with a 40+ year service expectation, and the warm mid-to-deep red-brown colour deepens with weathering. This thick profile is supplied against our supplier's published thick-decking range for the species; availability and lead time are confirmed with our supplier at quote stage.

Technical profile

From the supplier specification sheet: Forest Red Gum (Eucalyptus tereticornis) carries a Medium High seasoned strength rating (SD4) with Janka hardness 11.3 (Very Hard) and density of 1000 to 1170 kg/m3. The species is BAL 12.5 to 19 rated under AS 3959-2009, termite resistant, and rated Class 1 above-ground durability with a 40+ year service expectation.

Applications

Decking, screening, step treads and architectural finishes inside and out.

Installation

Store boards flat, fully supported and off the ground, and keep them dry before installation. Allow the timber to acclimatise at the site before fixing.
Fix with hot dipped galvanised or stainless steel screws, two per joist, pre-drilled and countersunk. Stainless steel fixings are recommended for coastal or poolside work.
Maintain ventilation gaps between boards and adequate ground clearance so the deck can dry out; the supplier installation guidelines under Documents and downloads set out clearances in detail.
Use sharp, quality cutting tools and seal cut ends with decking oil. Wear appropriate eye, ear and breathing protection when cutting.

Maintenance

Clean the surface before coating; an oxalic acid based timber cleaner removes dirt, grease and tannin stains.
Finish with a penetrating decking oil per the coating manufacturer's label, then re-coat on a regular cycle suited to exposure and traffic.
Monitor the coated timber for colour loss and dryness, and re-coat when it begins to look dry to maintain protection.
