140×42 mm Solid Merbau is the heavy-section board in our Merbau range, at more than twice the thickness of the 19 mm decking lines. Suitability for a particular span, joist spacing or structure is confirmed at quote stage against current supplier specification.

Merbau is stable, easy to work and weathers to a deep reddish brown. The supplier lists Class 2 durability for Merbau. Merbau is an imported hardwood: it is not Australian grown and is not part of our Class 1 Australian hardwood range. Like all Merbau, it can release tannins in its first months in service, so manage runoff near light paving or render.

Technical profile

How this applies to the 140 x 42 section: the durability class above is published for the species. Seasoning condition, grade and any structural rating for this heavier section are confirmed at quote stage rather than assumed from the 19 mm decking lines. We supply this profile in random lengths only, ordered by total linear metres; preferred individual lengths can be requested by quote.

Applications

Outdoor work where a heavier Merbau board section is specified. Intended structural use for this section is confirmed at quote stage.

Installation

Store boards flat, fully supported and off the ground, and keep them dry before installation. Allow the timber to acclimatise at the site before fixing.
Fix with hot dipped galvanised or stainless steel screws, two per joist, pre-drilled and countersunk. Stainless steel fixings are recommended for coastal or poolside work.
Manage tannin runoff near light-coloured paving or render during the first months in service.
Use sharp, quality cutting tools and seal cut ends with decking oil. Wear appropriate eye, ear and breathing protection when cutting.

Maintenance

Clean the surface before coating; an oxalic acid based timber cleaner removes dirt, grease and tannin stains.
Finish with a penetrating decking oil per the coating manufacturer's label, then re-coat on a regular cycle suited to exposure and traffic.
Monitor the coated timber for colour loss and dryness, and re-coat when it begins to look dry to maintain protection.
