Solid Merbau Decking Sizes: 90x19, 140x19, 190x19, 90x42 and 140x42

We list Solid Merbau in five sections: 90 x 19, 140 x 19 and 190 x 19 mm boards, and heavier 90 x 42 and 140 x 42 mm sections. All five are sold per linear metre in random lengths: you order the total metres, not individual boards. Two of them, 140 x 42 and 190 x 19, carry a pack-opening fee below their full-pack quantity. What we can tell you about each size depends on the supplier documents we hold, and this guide says where those documents stop.

The 19 mm boards: 90, 140 or 190 wide

Supplier documentation for our 90 x 19 and 140 x 19 Merbau decking gives board lengths of 1,800 to 5,700 mm, supplied as random lengths; the 190 x 19 board is listed in random lengths without a stated range. Preferred individual lengths can be requested by quote. Width changes how many linear metres cover your area and how many joins and fixings you have; our guides to how board sizes are measured and 135 x 19 vs 140 x 19 cover that in more detail.

WoodSolutions' Domestic Timber Deck Design guide notes that narrower boards let water drain through a deck more easily, and that wider boards need to be thicker to reduce the chance of cupping. For the 190 mm board we do not yet hold the supplier's installation instructions, so fixing and board spacing must follow the supplier's or manufacturer's instructions for that profile. Ask us before you plan around it.

The 42 mm sections

The 90 x 42 and 140 x 42 sections are much heavier than the decking boards. The durability class our supplier publishes is for the species; seasoning condition, grade and any structural rating for these sections are confirmed at quote stage rather than assumed from the 19 mm lines. If you intend a structural use, tell us when you ask, and size it to your plans or engineer.

Things to plan for with any Merbau

  • Tannin. Merbau releases water-soluble extractives that can stain unsealed paving, concrete and render. See Merbau tannin bleed before your boards arrive.
  • Board gaps. Our calculator starts at a 4 mm gap as a calculation assumption only. The gap you lay comes from the installation instructions for your boards or from your installer; we do not currently hold a supplier installation guide for our Merbau.
  • Durability context. Our Australian hardwood vs Merbau comparison explains what Class 2 means next to the Class 1 Australian hardwoods.

FAQ

Can I choose the board lengths?
