86x19 mm Ironbark is a narrow-profile hardwood board suited to decking runs where a tighter board line is wanted, and it doubles as a screening and batten timber on projects that need the same colour and hardness carried from the deck into a privacy screen or balustrade infill. It is one of the densest decking timbers sold in the Sydney market and is chosen where long-term performance matters more than upfront cost.

Our supplier's Ironbark is supplied as Grey Ironbark or Red Ironbark: select the species above. Sold as Class 1 hardwood: the supplier specification sheet publishes Class 1 above-ground natural durability with a 40+ year service expectation, and boards are typically supplied kiln dried. Colour runs deep grey-brown to near black with age and weathering. Because Ironbark is dense and hard on cutting tools, it is more often supplied to order than held as broad shelf stock, so lead times can run longer than for Spotted Gum or Merbau.

Sold per linear metre in random lengths. Preferred lengths, packs and bulk quantities are quoted against current supplier availability: add your linear metres to the cart, or request a quote for project volumes.

Looking for 90x19 decking? This board measures 86 mm across the face, not 90 mm. Laid with the standard 4 mm gap it covers 90 mm of deck per board, which is why the two sizes need different linear metre quantities for the same area. Sydney Timber Supply does supply genuine 90x19 decking in Merbau and Jambu Mixed. The widths are compared in our 86x19 vs 90x19 decking guide.

Timber calculator

Calculating for: 86x19 mm Ironbark Hardwood Decking

Calculator mode
Area to linear metres

Supplied in random lengths, so there is no length to choose: order the total linear metres you need.

Enter your measurements and select Calculate to see an estimate.

How this is calculated

Cover width (m) = (board width + gap) ÷ 1000

Linear metres required = area ÷ cover width

Linear metres with wastage = linear metres × (1 + wastage ÷ 100)

Reverse: estimated coverage area = linear metres × cover width

Estimates only. Confirm final quantities against your measured plans and the product's actual cover width before ordering.

Guidance

Working with this timber

Technical profile

From the supplier specification sheet: Red Ironbark is Eucalyptus crebra and E. fibrosa; Grey Ironbark is E. drepanophylla. Grey Ironbark carries a Very High seasoned strength rating (SD1) with Janka hardness 16 and density of 1106 to 1170 kg/m3, while Red Ironbark is rated SD3 with Janka 11.9. The species is BAL 19 to 29 rated under AS 3959-2009, termite resistant, and rated Class 1 above-ground durability with a 40+ year service expectation.

Applications

Decking, screening, battens, heavy outdoor structures and high-traffic decks.

Installation

  • Store boards flat, fully supported and off the ground, and keep them dry before installation. Allow the timber to acclimatise at the site before fixing.
  • Fix with hot dipped galvanised or stainless steel screws, two per joist, pre-drilled and countersunk. Stainless steel fixings are recommended for coastal or poolside work.
  • Maintain ventilation gaps between boards and adequate ground clearance so the deck can dry out; the supplier installation guidelines under Documents and downloads set out clearances in detail.
  • Use sharp, quality cutting tools and seal cut ends with decking oil. Wear appropriate eye, ear and breathing protection when cutting.

Maintenance

  • Clean the surface before coating; an oxalic acid based timber cleaner removes dirt, grease and tannin stains.
  • Finish with a penetrating decking oil per the coating manufacturer's label, then re-coat on a regular cycle suited to exposure and traffic.
  • Monitor the coated timber for colour loss and dryness, and re-coat when it begins to look dry to maintain protection.
